Pimcore vs Akeneo in 2026: Licences, Hosting and Who Each Suits

Shakewell ·

Pimcore vs Akeneo used to be a comparison of two open-source PIMs. In 2026 it is not quite that. Pimcore’s free edition now carries a revenue cap, and Akeneo 7, the on-premise and PaaS version of Akeneo’s paid product, reached end of support on 30 September 2026. Both changes shift who each platform suits.

This is the head-to-head, written for Australian retailers and brands, with short sections on Akeneo vs Salsify and Akeneo vs Inriver at the end. For the wider market, and what to do if you are still on Akeneo 7, start with choosing PIM software in 2026.

The short answer

Akeneo is a PIM, built around products and the people who enrich them. Its paid packages are SaaS. Its free Community Edition is self-hosted and has no revenue cap.

Pimcore is a broader data platform covering PIM, master data, digital assets and web content, which you shape to your own model and host yourself or on Pimcore’s PaaS. Its Community edition is free only below a revenue threshold.

If your problem is product content for a storefront and a few channels, and a merchandising team will run it, Akeneo is usually the closer fit. If your problem is wider than products and you have developers to build on it, Pimcore deserves the look.

Licensing and editions

Pimcore

Since Platform Version 2025.1, Pimcore’s Community edition has been licensed under the Pimcore Open Core License (POCL) rather than GPLv3. Pimcore says it is free for non-production use, for academic and non-profit organisations, and for companies with annual revenue under 5 million euros or US dollars. The licence also rules out offering Pimcore’s core as SaaS without a commercial agreement.

Above the threshold, the paid editions are:

  • Professional: a commercial licence with the same modules as Community, plus the TinyMCE editor. Listed at $9,900 a year.
  • Enterprise: every module, long-term support (LTS) and optional 24/7 support, on-premise or in your private cloud. Listed at $29,900 a year.
  • Enterprise PaaS: Enterprise with managed hosting, quoted individually.

Pimcore’s pricing page shows a dollar sign without naming the currency, so confirm it before converting to Australian dollars. Pimcore also says there are no limits on products, assets or users, and asks you to get in touch if you need more than four production instances.

That answers the “Pimcore Community vs Enterprise” question. Enterprise adds the Workflow Designer, Portal Engine, Data Quality Management, translation provider interfaces, Datahub file export, simple REST and webhooks, and the e-commerce framework, along with LTS.

Akeneo

Akeneo’s Community Edition is open source under OSL 3.0, with no revenue cap. Since 2026 it uses calendar versioning: only the latest release, currently v2026.4 from 28 August 2026, gets bug and security fixes, and breaking changes can arrive in any release.

Akeneo’s paid packages, Growth, Advanced and Premium, are all SaaS. Akeneo 7, which covered the PaaS (Flexibility) and on-premise editions, reached end of support on 30 September 2026, and Akeneo’s support-dates page lists no later version of either. Akeneo offers a free trial of Growth and asks you to call for a quote on Advanced and Premium.

Architecture and hosting

Both are PHP applications built on Symfony, so a developer who knows one can find their way around the other. The difference is scope.

Pimcore is a framework with three kinds of element: data objects for structured data such as products and customers (the PIM and MDM side), assets (DAM), and documents for web pages, print and email (the CMS side). You can run any edition yourself, or use Pimcore’s PaaS.

Akeneo is a PIM. The Community Edition is yours to host and upgrade. The paid product is SaaS, so hosting and upgrades are Akeneo’s job, and integrations go through its API and apps.

Data modelling

Pimcore lets you design the model. Data object classes are built from field types, with inheritance, localisation and classification stores, and the same tools model a supplier or a store location as readily as a product. That flexibility is the reason to choose it, and the reason it needs someone who designs data models well.

Akeneo is opinionated, and built for products. Attributes are grouped into families, products sit in category trees, and variants hang off product models with one or two levels of variation and up to ten variant axes. Reference entities, for things like brands or materials with attributes of their own, are in the SaaS packages but not the Community Edition. There is less to design, it is quicker to teach a merchandising team, and it is harder to bend to data that is not product data.

Digital assets

Pimcore’s DAM is part of the core, so even Community includes it. Enterprise adds the Portal Engine for building asset and product portals.

Akeneo’s Asset Manager is not in the Community Edition; its API documentation lists it as an Enterprise feature. All three SaaS packages include a DAM with an integrated content delivery network. On Community Edition, a serious asset library needs a home of its own.

Workflow and approvals

Pimcore’s workflow management is in the core and builds on Symfony’s workflow component. Workflows apply to data objects, assets and documents, and are configured in YAML, so a developer sets them up. Enterprise adds the Workflow Designer and workflow automation.

In Akeneo, approval runs on drafts and proposals: contributors propose changes and product owners approve or reject them, using Akeneo’s enterprise permissions. On SaaS, validation workflows, collaboration workflows and access rights come with Advanced and Premium, not Growth. The Community Edition does not include the approval workflow.

Syndication and connectors

Akeneo’s SaaS packages each include one activation channel for product feeds, with Shared Catalogs as an add-on. Apps for Shopify, Adobe Commerce and Salesforce Commerce Cloud are add-ons. Akeneo builds its own Adobe Commerce connector: a one-way module installed on the Adobe Commerce side that imports PIM data into the store. A free community version works with the Community Edition but comes without support; the supported version is for the SaaS packages.

Pimcore Community includes the Datahub, which exposes data to other systems over GraphQL, and the Data Importer. File export, simple REST, webhooks and the Productsup feed connector are Enterprise modules. Commerce connectors come from partners: the Pimcore Store lists a two-way Magento bridge built by Scandiweb, available only on Enterprise and PaaS, and the Pimcore connectors for Shopify we have looked at are partner-built too.

How each one syncs to Shopify, and the mapping work that matters more than the connector, is covered in PIM for Shopify.

Who each suits

Akeneo suits retailers and brands whose problem is product content for their sales channels, run day to day by a merchandising team. Its SaaS takes hosting and upgrades off your hands and offers vendor-built Shopify and Adobe Commerce apps as add-ons. The Community Edition suits a smaller business with a developer, a straightforward catalogue, no need for approvals or a DAM, and the discipline to stay on the latest release.

Pimcore suits businesses whose problem is wider than product content: master data across suppliers, customers or locations, a large asset library, or web content from the same platform. It needs developers, in house or at a partner, who know PHP and Symfony. Under 5 million euros or US dollars in revenue, Community gives you DAM and workflow free. Above it, budget for at least Professional, and for Enterprise if you want LTS, the Enterprise modules or the Magento bridge.

Either way, the expensive part is rarely the licence. It is the modelling and the integrations.

Akeneo vs Salsify

Salsify calls itself a product experience management (PXM) platform, and defines PXM as managing, optimising and syndicating product content from one place. Its weight is on the syndication end: Salsify puts its network at more than 2,600 destinations, runs a GDSN data pool, and offers SXM (supplier experience management) for retailers sourcing content from suppliers.

Akeneo’s weight is on enrichment inside the business. If your main problem is getting content accepted by retailers and marketplaces, Salsify is built for that. If it is getting your own catalogue right first, Akeneo is the closer fit. Salsify does not publish prices. If you supply Australian grocery and retail, local syndication through SKUvantage sits alongside either.

Akeneo vs Inriver, and Pimcore vs Inriver

Inriver is a multi-tenant SaaS PIM. It says brands, manufacturers and retailers use it, and that it is particularly strong for B2B manufacturers and multi-market enterprises with intricate specifications, variants and compliance requirements. It sells syndication (Syndicate Advance) and digital shelf analytics alongside the PIM, and has its own Shopify adapter. Its four plans, Foundation, Core, Professional and Enterprise, are customised to each customer, with no published prices.

Against Akeneo’s SaaS it is a like-for-like comparison: weigh how each models your products and which channels you need to feed. Against Pimcore the difference is ownership. Inriver runs the platform for you; Pimcore gives you the code, and either the job of running it or its PaaS.

Common questions

Is Pimcore or Akeneo better?

Neither, in general. Akeneo is a PIM built around products and the merchandising teams who enrich them, and its paid packages are SaaS. Pimcore is a broader platform covering PIM, master data, digital assets and web content, which developers shape to your model and which you host yourself or on Pimcore's PaaS. If product content for your sales channels is the problem, Akeneo is usually the closer fit. If the problem is wider than products, look at Pimcore.

What is the difference between Pimcore Community and Enterprise?

Licence, modules and support. Community is free under the Pimcore Open Core License for non-production use, academic and non-profit organisations, and companies with annual revenue under 5 million euros or US dollars. Enterprise adds modules such as the Workflow Designer, Portal Engine and Data Quality Management, plus long-term support and optional 24/7 support. Professional sits between them: a commercial licence for businesses above the threshold, with the same modules as Community plus the TinyMCE editor.

Is Akeneo Community Edition still free after Akeneo 7?

Yes. The Community Edition is open source under OSL 3.0 and has no revenue cap. Since 2026 it uses calendar versioning, and only the latest release gets bug and security fixes, so staying on it means keeping up with every release. Akeneo 7's end of support on 30 September 2026 applied to the PaaS (Flexibility) and on-premise editions of Akeneo's paid product.

How do Salsify and Inriver compare with Akeneo?

Salsify is a PXM platform weighted toward syndication: getting product content to retailers and marketplaces through a network it puts at more than 2,600 destinations. Inriver is a multi-tenant SaaS PIM that positions itself for B2B manufacturers and multi-market enterprises with complex specifications. Akeneo's centre of gravity is enriching your own catalogue. None of the three publishes prices for its larger packages.
