Shopify Pricing in Australia (2026): Every Plan, and When Upgrading Pays
Shakewell ·
Shopify’s Australian pricing is published in Australian dollars, which makes it easier to compare than most platforms. What it does not tell you is which plan you should be on, and the answer is usually not the one the plan names suggest.
Here are the numbers, then the arithmetic that decides between them.
Shopify plans and prices in Australia
Shopify’s published Australian prices, checked 25 September 2026:
| Plan | Paid yearly | Paid monthly | Online card rate (Shopify Payments) | Third-party gateway fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | A$42/mo | A$56/mo | 1.7% + 30c | 2% |
| Grow | A$114/mo | A$149/mo | 1.55% + 30c | 1% |
| Advanced | A$431/mo | A$575/mo | 1.35% + 30c | 0.6% |
| Plus | from A$3,700/mo (3-year term) | from A$4,000/mo (1-year term) | 1.15% + 30c | 0.2% |
Plus also offers a variable platform fee for more complex business structures, and its final price is negotiated, so treat that row as a starting point. We cover Plus in detail in what a Shopify Plus build costs in Australia.
Two things in that table matter more than the headline price.
Yearly billing saves about a quarter. On every plan below Plus, paying yearly costs roughly 25% less than paying monthly. If you are confident you will stay a year, that is the easiest saving available.
The third-party gateway fee is the hidden cost. If you process payments through a gateway other than Shopify Payments, Shopify charges its own fee on top of whatever the gateway charges. On Basic that is 2% of every order. For most Australian stores, Shopify Payments is the sensible default; if you have a negotiated gateway rate you want to keep, include this fee when you compare.
When does upgrading pay for itself?
Every step up the plans costs more per month and gives you a lower card rate. So there is a monthly sales figure at which the saving on card fees covers the higher plan price. Using the yearly prices and the standard online card rates above:
| Upgrade | Extra cost per month | Card rate saving | Pays for itself on fees above |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic to Grow | A$72 | 0.15% | about A$48,000/month in online sales |
| Grow to Advanced | A$317 | 0.20% | about A$158,500/month |
| Advanced to Plus | about A$3,269 | 0.20% | about A$1.6 million/month |
The 30c per transaction is the same on every plan, so it drops out of the comparison.
What this tells you:
- Basic to Grow pays for itself on fees at a fairly modest volume, and many growing stores cross that line without noticing.
- Grow to Advanced needs substantial monthly revenue before the card rate alone justifies it. Below that, move up for a feature you need, not to save on fees.
- Advanced to Plus almost never pays for itself on card rates. Nobody should move to Plus to save on transaction fees.
These are fee comparisons only, on standard online card rates. International cards, in-person payments and your real payment mix change the numbers, so run them against your own sales before deciding.
So what decides the plan?
Features, and whether you will use them.
- Basic suits a store that is starting out or selling modest volumes. Most small Australian stores are right here longer than they think.
- Grow is where most established small businesses land, and on fees alone the upgrade pays for itself at a fairly modest monthly volume.
- Advanced earns its place when you need its reporting and operational features, and at higher volumes the card rate does help.
- Plus is a different decision entirely, made for three reasons: customising the checkout itself, pricing that differs for each trade customer, or operating several storefronts. Since April 2026 the B2B basics, company profiles, payment terms, volume pricing and up to three B2B catalogues, are on every paid plan, so wholesale alone no longer forces the move. We wrote up when Shopify Plus earns its keep, including when it does not.
What the plan price leaves out
The monthly plan is rarely the biggest number in running a Shopify store:
- Apps. A store running ten apps can easily spend more on subscriptions than on its plan. Audit them once a year.
- The theme. A premium theme is a one-off cost; a custom theme is a project.
- Development and support. Any store doing meaningful revenue needs someone to maintain it, in-house or an agency.
- Payment fees. At volume, card fees usually dwarf the plan price, which is why the break-even arithmetic above matters.

Common questions
How much does Shopify cost per month in Australia?
On yearly billing, Basic is A$42 a month, Grow A$114 and Advanced A$431. Paid monthly they are A$56, A$149 and A$575. Shopify Plus starts at A$3,700 a month on a three-year term or A$4,000 on a one-year term. These are Shopify's published Australian prices, checked 25 September 2026.
What are Shopify's card fees in Australia?
With Shopify Payments, the standard online card rate is 1.7% + 30c on Basic, 1.55% + 30c on Grow, 1.35% + 30c on Advanced and 1.15% + 30c on Plus. If you use a third-party payment gateway instead, Shopify adds a transaction fee of 2%, 1%, 0.6% or 0.2% respectively, on top of what the gateway charges.
When is it worth upgrading from Grow to Advanced?
On card fees alone, at around A$158,500 a month in online sales. Advanced costs A$317 a month more than Grow on yearly billing and saves 0.2% on the standard online card rate, so the saving only covers the extra fee above that figure. Below it, upgrade for a feature you need, not to save on fees.
Is Shopify Plus worth it to save on transaction fees?
Almost never on fees alone. Plus saves 0.2% on the standard online card rate compared with Advanced, but costs about A$3,269 a month more on published pricing, so the saving only covers the difference above roughly A$1.6 million a month in online sales. Retailers move to Plus for checkout customisation, customer-specific B2B pricing and multiple storefronts, not for card rates.
