Shopify POS in Australia (2026): POS Pro, Hardware and What It Costs

Shakewell ·

Shopify POS is the till that runs on the same back office as a Shopify online store. For an Australian retailer already selling on Shopify, that is the appeal: one product catalogue, one stock count and one customer record across the website and the shop.

What it costs depends on three things: your Shopify plan, how many shops need POS Pro, and how much you take by card in person. Below are the numbers from Shopify’s, Lightspeed’s and Square’s Australian pages, as at October 2026, and when we would keep an existing POS instead. For the online side of Shopify’s pricing, see Shopify pricing in Australia.

POS Lite and POS Pro

People still search for POS Lite, but Shopify’s Australian pages no longer use the name. They call it casual in-person selling, and it is included on every plan. It covers taking payments, simple customer profiles, and returns at the location where the item was bought. On Basic, only a limited number of staff can use POS. Grow and Advanced allow unlimited POS logins.

POS Pro is the paid upgrade for a permanent shop, charged per location. Shopify lists what it adds:

  • Unlimited staff access, with roles and permissions.
  • Inventory counts, purchase orders and low stock alerts.
  • Rich customer profiles, lifetime value reporting and loyalty insights.
  • Returns and exchanges at any location.
  • Retail reports, and omnichannel selling such as buy online, pick up in store.

Shopify recommends Pro for shops with a lot of foot traffic, several levels of staff or a large catalogue. A weekend market stall does not need it. A shop with a manager, casual staff and stock to count usually does.

What Shopify POS costs per location

Shopify’s Australian prices, as at October 2026:

  • Your plan. Basic is A$42 a month on yearly billing (A$56 monthly), Grow A$114 (A$149) and Advanced A$431 (A$575). Plus starts at A$3,700 a month on a three-year term. Every plan includes the online store.
  • POS Pro. A$129 a month per location on Basic, Grow and Advanced. Shopify’s POS Pro yearly offer, open only to stores new to POS Pro, puts it at A$97 a month per location on a 12-month term, paid monthly, and includes a free POS Terminal for each location. On Plus, Shopify’s pricing table shows POS Pro included for 20 locations, and up to 200 with Shopify Payments.
  • Locations. Plans below Plus allow up to 10.

So one shop and a website on Grow, billed yearly, with POS Pro at A$129, is A$243 a month before card fees. Three shops is A$501.

Shopify’s pricing pages do not say whether these prices include GST. How GST applies to Shopify’s fees is covered in our pricing guide.

What Shopify POS costs per card transaction

In person, Shopify Payments charges a percentage with no fixed fee:

  • Basic: 1.85%
  • Grow: 1.75%
  • Advanced: 1.65%
  • Plus: 1.45%

On a A$100 sale in the shop, that is A$1.85 on Basic and A$1.45 on Plus. Online card rates are different, from 1.7% + 30c on Basic to 1.15% + 30c on Plus, and the pricing guide covers them. Tap to Pay on iPhone is charged at the same in-person rates and needs Shopify Payments.

Shopify POS hardware sold in Australia

Shopify’s Australian hardware store lists the following, as at October 2026. It does not say whether the prices include GST.

  • Tap to Pay on iPhone or Android. No extra hardware. Shopify supports Tap to Pay on iPhone in Australia on an iPhone XS or newer, and it accepts eftpos cards.
  • WisePad 3 Card Reader, A$79. A Bluetooth reader with a PIN pad, for tap and chip.
  • POS Terminal, A$419. A countertop terminal with a customer display, for tap, chip and swipe. The tablet that runs POS is extra.
  • POS Hub, A$105. Connects USB accessories to the tablet. It showed as unavailable when we checked.
  • Accessories. A Zebra DS2208 scanner at A$149, an Epson OmniLink receipt printer at A$472, VPOS cash drawers at A$109 and a Bosstab tablet stand at A$164.

The Verifone Victa Mobile, a handheld that runs POS, takes payments and scans barcodes, is listed at A$538. Shopify’s Australian store shows it as not yet available, with a sign-up for a notice when it is. If you already have a POS Go, Shopify says it stops working as a mobile device on 26 May 2027 and becomes a countertop terminal.

Shopify also says your own tablet, phone and existing hardware will work in most cases, so check its compatibility list before you buy.

Shopify POS for markets and pop-ups

For a market stall, the casual in-person selling on any plan is enough. A phone with Tap to Pay, or the A$79 WisePad 3, is all the hardware you need, and stall sales come off the same stock count as the website.

If you do not sell online, though, Square costs less to run at a market. Its free plan has no monthly fee and charges 1.6% per tap or insert, against A$42 a month and 1.85% on Shopify Basic.

Shopify POS vs Lightspeed vs Square

Prices as at October 2026, from each vendor’s Australian pages. Square’s Premium plan is custom priced, and none of the three pages says whether its plan prices include GST.

Lightspeed is the better fit when the shop floor is the business. Each location includes one register, with extra registers at A$39 a month, and its pricing page lists landed costs, inventory forecasting, supplier catalogues and custom reporting. Its 1.5% card-present rate is lower than Shopify’s in-person rate on every plan below Plus. Lightspeed notes that prices can vary by business and industry, that its hardware is sold separately, and that existing terminals cannot be reused.

Square is the better fit for sellers who are mostly in person and watching fixed costs: market stalls, pop-ups and single shops with a small range. The free plan has no monthly fee, the Square Reader is A$65, and Square lists Afterpay for in-person and online sales at 6% + 30c per transaction, excluding GST. Shopify’s Australian POS pages do not mention Afterpay, so confirm with Shopify before you count on it at the counter. Square’s 1.6% rate applies to sellers who signed up from 30 May 2024, or who are on Plus or Premium. Sellers who signed up earlier and are on the free plan pay 1.9% on Square Reader, Square Stand or Tap to Pay.

Shopify is the better fit when online matters as much as the shops. Stock, customers, gift cards and orders live in one place, and POS Pro adds buy online, pick up in store and returns at any location. If you also sell into New Zealand, the POS Terminal and POS Hub are sold as AU/NZ models, and one store can serve both countries.

When to keep your POS or ERP and connect it instead

Moving the tills is a bigger change than moving a website. Staff retrain, hardware changes and payment contracts end. Sometimes the better answer is to keep what the shops run and connect it to Shopify online.

Keep the existing POS when:

  • The ERP runs the shops. If stock, pricing and purchasing live in the ERP, the tills usually follow it. That cuts both ways: the NetSuite and Business Central connectors also bring in Shopify POS orders, as we covered in Shopify ERP integration in Australia, so moving the tills does not always mean losing the ERP link.
  • The POS already has a Shopify connector. Retail Express is one. Maropost’s connector syncs products, customers, orders and stock with Shopify. It has gaps, such as order notes not reaching the pick list, but filling a gap usually costs less than a rollout.
  • Your payment terms beat Shopify’s. If you have a negotiated card rate or terminals under contract, price the switch against that.
  • Many shops are trained and stable. The cost of a rollout grows with every store.

Move to Shopify POS when the shops are few, the connector costs more each year than it saves, or sync gaps create manual work every day. Shopify’s current POS Pro yearly offer includes help moving products, customers and inventory from your current POS, though not historical data.

Either way, decide which system is the source of truth for products, stock and prices before anything is built. That decision shapes the rest.

What we would do

Count the locations that need POS Pro, take a month of real in-store card takings, and work out the fees on each option. Then list what the shops do that the website does not: returns, stock transfers, staff permissions. That list decides between Shopify POS and an integration more reliably than the monthly price.

Our three Shopify-certified developers can run that comparison with you, or connect the POS you keep. More on our Shopify development work, and on when Shopify Plus earns its keep if you are heading past 10 locations.

Common questions

How much does Shopify POS cost in Australia?

Selling in person is included on every Shopify plan, from A$42 a month on Basic with yearly billing. POS Pro, for permanent shops, adds A$129 a month per location, or A$97 a month on Shopify's 12-month POS Pro yearly offer, which is open only to stores new to POS Pro. A card reader starts at A$79 for the WisePad 3, or costs nothing with Tap to Pay on iPhone or Android. These are Shopify's Australian prices as at October 2026.

What is the difference between Shopify POS Lite and POS Pro?

POS Lite is the old name for the in-person selling included on every plan, which Shopify's Australian pages now call casual in-person selling. It covers card payments, simple customer profiles and returns at the original location. POS Pro adds unlimited staff with roles and permissions, inventory counts and purchase orders, rich customer profiles, returns at any location and retail reports.

What does Shopify POS charge per card transaction?

With Shopify Payments, in-person card payments cost 1.85% on Basic, 1.75% on Grow, 1.65% on Advanced and 1.45% on Plus, with no fixed fee per transaction, as at October 2026. Online card payments carry a 30c fee on top of a lower percentage.

Is Shopify POS cheaper than Square?

For in-person sales alone, usually not. Square for Retail's free plan has no monthly fee and charges 1.6% per tap or insert, against A$42 a month and 1.85% on Shopify Basic. Shopify earns its cost when the same stock, customers and orders run across an online store and the shops.
