Case study
Standards Australia
Shakewell partnered with Standards Australia to design and develop the Digital Standards Web App (DSWA)—a scalable, modular platform that digitises access to Australian Standards. The solution improves usability, compliance efficiency, and positions Standards Australia as a digital leader in the sector.
At a glance
- Platform: the Digital Standards Web App (DSWA), part of Standards Australia’s Modular Standards Architecture initiative
- Content: dynamic XML rendering using the NISO STS framework
- Delivered: 2022–2023, with ongoing support and feature extension since
The problem
Standards Australia maintains an extensive catalogue of compliance documents critical to numerous Australian industries. Existing systems made it difficult for users to efficiently find, interpret and apply those standards in a digital context, and internal teams were constrained by legacy infrastructure.
Our approach
We designed and developed the Digital Standards Web App — a next-generation standards-access platform built as part of the broader Modular Standards Architecture initiative, intended to let users search, retrieve and apply standards efficiently through a genuinely usable digital reading experience.
The build covered secure user access and permissions, dynamic XML content rendering using the NISO STS framework, integration with existing document libraries, bookmarks and annotations to personalise reading, and a responsive, standards-compliant interface built for industry-grade use.
The outcome
A scalable, modular platform that digitises access to Australian Standards, improving usability and compliance efficiency. Designed, developed and delivered between 2022 and 2023, with Shakewell continuing to support the platform and extend it in line with evolving user needs.
